Arming Your Children with God’s Truth
Thursday, September 7, 2023 by Doreen Wennberg
Do you know that God has a plan for your child’s life? Have you ever thought that the enemy, Satan, has a plan for your child’s life? It’s not to give them a hope and a future—trust me—the enemy’s plan is far different from God’s plan for your child!
The Enemy’s Plan for Destruction
Satan’s plan is always for destruction. The Bible tells us, “He comes to steal, kill, and destroy” (John 10:10a NIV). We may not want to believe that, but it’s true. A stolen childhood, the death of a dream, or destroyed family relationships are a few ways the enemy plans destruction. Can you think of others— how about friendships, health, or identity?
There is an unseen realm that is very real. The Physical world we can see. The Spiritual world we cannot see. The Bible describes the invisible war in Ephesians 6:12, “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”
We live in a crucial time in history. Arming your children with God’s truth is essential in the fight against the enemy’s tactics to destroy. Knowing how to defend themselves with scriptural truth is more important now than ever.
God’s Plan of Salvation
We may think our children are too young to understand telling them about Jesus. The disciples probably thought that too— and tried to stop parents from bringing their children to Jesus.
But Jesus told them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these” (Matthew 19:14 NIV).
The enemy does not want your child to know this truth. The kingdom of Heaven is available to all who come to Jesus. We come to Jesus by faith.
Young children can understand the simple truths taught in the Bible, and now is the time to share it with them. Your example of faith {teaching God’s truths to your children}, plants in them seeds of faith.
We saw Satan’s tactic is to steal, kill, and destroy people. But his primary tactic has always been to keep people from coming to know and believe in Jesus.
We will all die, and we will all live eternally somewhere. What we decide here on earth determines where we will live—heaven or hell. Its determined by our belief in Christ or our rejection of him.
Victory over the enemy begins with Salvation because Christ defeated death on the cross. Therefore, all those who trust in him will live eternally with him in Heaven. Jesus told us, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10 NIV).
Childlike faith is the ability to trust without the complication we adults tend to give to the topic of salvation. Salvation simply put, is to be saved from the result of our sin—eternal death.
God’s plan of salvation begins with recognizing that God our Creator is holy. God is unique, different from us, pure and perfect. We are not. God has never done wrong things, but we do. Pray for your child’s salvation and trust God to help you plant seeds of faith and times to talk about salvation with them. It is the greatest privilege a parent can have to lead their child to Christ.
Arming Your Child with God’s Truth
It is never too soon to begin teaching your children about God. Adults know that life will not always be carefree. Christians know that believing in God does not mean a-life-free-from-affliction. Children can learn and come to know that Jesus will be with them in the middle of the storm.
Teaching our children to call on Jesus amidst fearful moments helps them learn important truths about his character.
God is our Help, taken from Psalm 46:1, is a simple truth a child can understand. God is our Refuge, which means being safe or sheltered from danger or trouble. Children can understand that God is our safe place and that he is who we go to when we’re afraid.
Arming your children with truth begins with reading the Bible together every day. A time for bible stories— and a time for one verse—one nugget of truth —that helps them remember it when prayed out loud.
Establishing a routine of praying before bed (when children may be more likely to be afraid) can help model dependence on God.
Choose different verses to say and pray— like the one below to help your children hear and learn truths from scripture.
Read the verse first and then say it out loud with your child. God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble (Psalm 46:1 NLT).
Dear God, (A short prayer to pray together – or make it your own).
Thank you for always being with us. Thank you that you help us when we are afraid. I’m glad that you help me feel safe. When the dark places in the night scare me, I’m thankful I can call on you. Mommy says, “God is my safe place and my help.” That makes me feel better. ~Amen
A closing prayer for Mom:
Father,
Thank you for helping me to arm my child with the truth of your word. I pray that you give me wisdom in what to share and what to pray with them. Keep teaching me so that I can help them to know you and learn how to stand against the enemy on their own. I pray for each of my children’s salvation. I pray that you would grow the seeds of faith in their heart. Help them to understand what sin means, so they will turn from it and turn to you, and live forever in heaven with you. ~In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
